When it comes to inspiration for residential stairs, we like to take a look at everything. Some of our favorites sites to get inspired by include the carefully procured collections from HGTV, and the user-submitted photos on Houzz. Here are a few of our recent findings that get us excited about Southwestern style.
HGTV
A home can be clean and simple but still have some unique elements to it. HGTV featured this traditional white and wood staircase with a little something extra. The tribal-print runner on the stairs gives the space a fiery kick that’s unexpected yet gorgeous. We also love the way they brought the bright red and orange colors from the runner into the rest of the home by painting the front door in a similar hue. This gives a cohesiveness to the space so it all flows together in harmony.
Houzz
Houzz showcases a number of staircase renovations, many of which incorporate the unique materials, patterns and colors of the southwest. From stained treads designed to match hardwood flooring, to Aztec carpet draped over tribal prints, Southwestern residential stairs draw inspiration from family lineage, artifacts, and historical settings.
For example, in a featured renovation in Arizona, the original wrought iron handrail was uncovered beneath a layer of wood framing and plaster. Original arches were restored to their unique proportions, and Saltillo tiles (which had been added) were removed to expose the red stained concrete steps.
For a mountain home in Albuquerque, a dark wooden staircase accented stucco and textured designs, which is proof that a simple design can harness a southwestern flare. Yet, contrast is a critical element.
Making These Ideas Work for Your Residential Stairs
Wondering how we can incorporate Southwestern residential stairs into your home? Here are a few ideas we’re dreaming up.
Imagine wood stairs leading down to a basement having the same natural hickory wood flooring as the main level of a home, while stair railings are painted a dark resin stain. For added appeal, picture large newel posts with oversized, embellished caps.
Perhaps you’re planning a renovation for your private residence, and you’d like to accentuate the Spanish colonial architecture in your home with a Southwestern staircase.
Suppose you’d like to channel a villa-inspired staircase with bold art and vibrant colored tiles in sequence on each stair inlay.
Maybe you are hoping to add a bit of Southwestern style to a contemporary inner-city loft. The good news regarding the beautiful, contrasting designs of the southwest is that they can be incorporated alongside existing elements. Best of all, imperfections are embraced in this rustic design style.
